It is very challenging for American athletes to pursue the Olympic dream. The challenge doesn’t stop at competing or constant training; it extends all the way to finding a way to afford the expenses. This is extremely difficult due to the fact that unlike Olympic sports in Germany, Russia, China, and other countries, Olympic sports in the United States of America are not government funded. Athletes who participate in Olympic sports are not guaranteed any yearly salary or comprehensive health insurance. It is because of this that athletes are forced to rely on funding from businesses and individuals to help pay for the expenses of their sport. Bobsled is one of the most watched Winter Olympic sports. In 2010-2011 bobsled races reached 600 million viewers having over 80 hours of World Cup and 22 hours of World Championship coverage with networks around the world. However, it is also one of the most expensive Olympic sports as well, making sponsorships a key component to an athlete’s success.
BENEFITS OF BEING MY SPONSOR
As my sponsor you will be guaranteed recognition by placing your company or personal name and/or your company logo on my sled or helmet, if desired. I will also be available for appearances and speaking to your organization or on behalf of your organization to groups in your community. As a sponsored athlete I will endorse quality products and services that your organization manufactures and distributes. Sponsoring parties will receive substantial recognition annually as your name will be seen during races and training throughout North America and potentially around the world. Sponsors will also receive emails keeping you up to date with my training, race results and any other exciting news during my season. As my sponsor, you will be the leading reason I am able to focus solely on training, and why I will be successful as a bobsled athlete and continue progressing until I reach my goal of competing in the Olympics. Finally, donating money to support a member of the USA Bobsled Team is a direct tax write off to individuals or company sponsors via the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation (USBSF) Athletic Training Fund that is set up as a 501c (3).
HOW SPONSORSHIP MONEY IS APPLIED
Sponsorship money I receive is used to help offset living and training expenses. These expenses include but are not limited to: health care insurance, hotel Stays in Calgary, Canada; Park City, Utah, and other housing costs throughout the year. It is also used to purchase airline tickets and rental vehicles for training in Lake Placid, NY; Park City, Utah; and Calgary, Canada. Funding can also be used to purchase a variety of training equipment (bobsled helmet, burn vest, ice spikes, supplements, winter shoes, pushing gloves, track spikes, etc.) For both summer and winter training, all of which total over $30,000 in expenses per year. On top of that sleds can cost up to $50,000 and new runners can be up to $10,000, therefore any support I receive is greatly needed.
